Doritos and Ho Hoes

“Doritos and ho-hoes. What a healthy lunch.”

Zach looked up, mouth full of chocolate and stared as Magenta slid across from him, school lunch neatly arranged on her tray. “This isn’t my lunch. It’s…An appetizer.” He ventured.

“Healthy appetizer.” She corrected herself. “And that’s a very attractive look for you, food hanging out of your mouth.

Quickly, he began to chew his food again, his eyes still on the snarky girl as if at any moment, she’d spit her sarcastic wit at him the way a cobra spat venom.

“You’re staring,” Magenta noted, her fork hovering over her own lunch.

“What made you dance with me, that night at homecoming?” He asked.

She gaped at him, purple lips tilted open slightly. No one had mentioned homecoming since it happened. Like just mentioning it would make each event that night real and actually make them something more than ‘hero support’. Make them the heroes of that night, as opposed to Will being the hero and getting all the glory. Like homecoming was a curse that made them stand out now.

“What are you talking about?” Was all she said.

“After…You know,” He shrugged. “You danced with me.”

“You asked me to earlier and I said no. Then the school almost fell out of the sky. We almost died and I had never danced with a guy. I figured I might as well.”

“Oh.” He shrugged and began to pick at the Doritos.

Magenta gave her eyes a roll. “For what it’s worth, you can be funny. That’s a start.”

Zach blinked, then gave her one of his best smiles. “I’ll share my dessert with you.” And he held out an oatmeal cream pie.

Magenta smiled.
